There should be an image here!Android is not nor will it likely ever be a threat to the iPhone. This being said, I do see it as a significant threat to Windows Mobile. See, enterprise users that want a true Enterprise level phone are likely either going to use the BlackBerry or setup an iPhone with as many enterprise ready apps as possible.

So this really leaves the consumer market looking at the only “real” iPhone alternative being something running Android. After all, who in their right mind is going to exclaim that Windows Mobile is a consumer mobile OS. It’s clearly best set for business users. And even then, it is not able to have the “wow” factor it once did.

In the end, despite all of its shortcomings, the iPhone will remain largely untouched. Marketing and innovation clearly goes beyond stable and expected. So even though the phone is a giant memory leak most days, the iPhone has won the minds of users everywhere much to the dismay of other mobile providers.

But then I remembered just how aweful Lotus really is. Do we really want IBM doing anything with software these days?

My objections aside with regard to IBM, I am also not really too into my recent use of another cloud based product put out for Ubuntu called Ubuntu One. Based on the DAYS of it being DOA on all my PCs, one might as well refer to it as Ubuntu Offline as I have yet to get it working. And I am hardly the only one.

Perhaps though IBM and Canonical get it right this time? I enjoy my Ubuntu desktop after all, so now all we need to do is get a better handle on the cloud computing aspect of things. Then things will likely work out fairly well from then on out.

These days, it feels like Google has their paw prints into just about everything. Well today I found out that Google is becoming more “powerful” than I could have ever imagined. And yes, the use of “powerful” was a poke at their PowerMeter project.

The idea behind their PowerMeter project is actually pretty cool. Help people conserve and save by allowing the user to see what kind of usage is taking place, in real time. So on the surface, this sounds fantastic! Sadly however, for 99% of us not part of a partner utility company, it also means buying needed hardware.

Needed hardware aside, I think that Google might be onto something here. Assuming you are using enough power in a month to warrant the need to closely monitor what is being used, going along with a TED energy monitor might be just the ticket.

Even then, those other search engines that provides results from everywhere are not really helping with the information overload. It’s just too much I am afraid. The sad state of reality is that search has remained entirely too lazy, in my opinions. Even Google, falls into this category to some degree.

Where do we go from here? Human powered indexes and real time results appear to be the future - unfortunately, this is not going to lead to accuracy. No, this will simply continue to lead to more confusion and general frustration.

If you’re involved in a business, then you’re almost definitely talking to people on a continual basis. For a lot of people, their job description means that they can basically talk on the phone with or send e-mails to a variety of people for the entire day, but communicating with them is just the beginning of what needs to be done. Whether you’re talking to customers, vendors, or anyone else for that matter, it’s important to record the details so that at any moment you or anyone else in your company can see the history of your communication with them. CRM (customer relationship management) software is ideal for this, and Timetonote puts the power of CRM in your hands.

If you’re not currently using some sort of CRM solution, then you know how crazy things can get when you’re trying to track down details in multiple e-mail messages, etc. The truth of the matter is that you will save time if you use Timetonote. When your entire team is involved, you can see recent history, find out who has talked to who, discover what was said, see upcoming tasks, and so on. Since Timetonote is totally free and the developers promise that this will continue to be true forever, you really have no excuse to not try managing information in this way.

Deciding to get out of the accounting business, the Office Accounting product will be discontinued on November 16, 2009. All of the features that are on-line for that program will disappear soon after.

This includes the Office Accounting Express 2009 program, which I’m told by an accountant in the family, works well for the small business user – and apparently will have utility after the on-line features go away.

The news cam from ZDNet this morning -

Starting November 16, Microsoft is ending distribution and sales of its Microsoft Office Accounting product. Company officials began notifying customers of the decision on October 30.

All Microsoft Office Accounting products in the UK and North America are affected by the decision, including Office Accounting Express, Office Accounting Standard, Office Accounting Professional, Office Accounting Professional Plus, Office Accounting 3-user and Small Business Accounting.

Here’s the back story as to why, according to a statement e-mailed to me by a company spokesperson:

“After evaluating the product over the past few years we have determined that other Microsoft offerings such as free templates in the Office system used with Excel and the Dynamics product are able to meet our customers’ needs. The Office Small Business web site has links to free templates for small businesses, such as invoices, expenses, time sheets, budgets and more and Microsoft’s Small Business Center is also a great resource for small businesses.”

Microsoft officials said that existing Office Accounting customers will get five years of mainstream, free support and five years of extended, paid support. Those who recently bought the product can return it for a refund within 30 days of purchase. (Details on how to return the activation key are here.)

The add-on services that are part of Office Accounting, including online sales from eBay and credit profile from Equifax, will no longer be available after December 15, 2009. The credit-card-processing services and service allowing users to order compatible checks and forms are still going to be available, however. In addition, according to a Frequently Asked Questions document on Microsoft’s Web site, “your customers will still be able to pay emailed invoices directly through PayPal.”

The article continues that full program customers  in the U.K. will get continuing support from a company named Mamut. The fate of U.S. customers is not so clear – Mary-Jo Foley gave an update stating this, and it seems to show that Office accounting isn’t as popular here as in the U.K.

It is somewhat strange this would be taken so quickly after a second service package was released, but no one ever accused Microsoft of logical thought.

Office accounting Express 2009 is still downloadable from here.
